چکیده

We have made CO(J = 2− 1) observations towards the HII region RCW 49 and its ionizing source, the rich stellar cluster Westerlund 2, with the NANTEN2 sub-mm telescope. These observations have revealed that two molecular clouds in velocity ranges of −11 to +9 km s and 11 to 21 km s respectively, show remarkably good spatial correlations with the Spitzer IRAC mid-infrared image of RCW 49, as well a velocity structures indicative of localized expansion around the bright central regions and stellar cluster. This strongly argues that the two clouds are physically associated with RCW 49. We obtain a new kinematic distance estimate to RCW 49 and Wd2 of 5.4 −1.4 kpc, based on the mean velocity and velocity spread of the associated gas. We argue that acceleration of the gas by stellar winds from Westerlund 2 is insufficient to explain the entire observed velocity dispersion of the molecular gas, and suggest a scenario in which a collision between the two clouds ∼4 Myrs ago may have triggered the formation of the stellar cluster. Subject headings: ISM: clouds — open clusters and associations: individual (Westerlund 2) — HII regions: individual (RCW 49)

A novel method for locating the local terrestrial laser scans in a global aerial point cloud

In addition to the heterogeneity of aerial and terrestrial views, the small scale terrestrial point clouds are hardly comparable with large scale and overhead aerial point clouds. A hierarchical method is proposed for automatic locating of terrestrial scans in aerial point cloud. The proposed method begins with detecting the candidate positions for the deployment of the terrestrial laser scanne...

Deep Near-infrared Imaging of an Embedded Cluster in the Extreme Outer Galaxy: Census of Supernovae Triggered Star Formation

While conducting a near-infrared (NIR) survey of “Digel Clouds”, which are thought to be located in the extreme outer Galaxy (EOG), Kobayashi & Tokunaga found star formation activity in “Cloud 2”, a giant molecular cloud at the Galactic radius of ∼ 20 kpc. Additional infrared imaging showed two embedded young clusters at the densest regions of the molecular cloud. Because the molecular cloud is...

Star Formation in the Most Distant Molecular Cloud in the Extreme Outer Galaxy: a Laboratory of Star Formation in an Early Epoch of the Galaxy’s Formation

We report the discovery of active star formation in Digel’s Cloud 2, which is one of the most distant giant molecular clouds known in the extreme outer Galaxy (EOG). At the probable Galactic radius of ∼20 kpc, Cloud 2 has a quite different environment from that in the solar neighborhood, including lower metallicity, much lower gas density, and small or no perturbation from spiral arms. With new...

A Tale of Two Cores: Triggered Massive Star Formation in the Bright-rimmed Cloud Sfo 75 How to Cite: Astrophysics a Tale of Two Cores: Triggered Massive Star Formation in the Bright-rimmed Cloud Sfo 75

Context. Bright-rimmed clouds (BRCs) are isolated molecular clouds located on the edges of evolved HII regions. Star formation within the BRCs may have been triggered through the propagation of photoionisation-induced shocks driven by the expansion of the HII region. Aims. The main focus of this paper is to investigate the current level of star formation within one of these clouds and evaluate ...

Formation of star clusters in the LMC and SMC. I. Preliminary results on cluster formation from colliding gas clouds

We demonstrate that single and binary star clusters can be formed during cloud-cloud collisions triggered by the tidal interaction between the Large and Small Magellanic clouds. We run two different sets of self-consistent numerical simulations which show that compact, bound star clusters can be formed within the centers of two colliding clouds due to strong gaseous shocks, compression, and dis...
